Water polo is in comparison to tennis and basketball, a marginal sport. However, talented male and female German players have a good chance of getting scholarships. A total of 282 male and 445 female players, with a total amount of $5.8 million of scholarships are awarded each year. Due to this and the top infrastructure at the universities, players are attracted from all over the world and provide an international flair to this college sport.
Requirements for a water polo scholarship
To have the chance of getting a scholarship you need to have played in the German Water Polo League. We assess each applicant individually. If you would like to find out if you would have the chance of receiving a scholarship, fill out our Opportunities Assessment Form.
Training
The college teams train 5 times per week for about 2 hours. The modern facilities are directly on campus which proves to be time saving for students. As well as this technique training there are 2 – 4 units of weight training, coordination and fitness training. A combination of professional training and team spirit helps to improve most players’ performances. Team Spirit plays a much larger role in the USA, than it does in Germany. You eat, study and live with your team which intensifies the team spirit!
Competing
Due to the fact that the colleges in the USA have professional trainers and the students receive top supervision, the quality of sport in the league is very high. The best teams in the Division I would easily be able to compete in the German League. For German players taking part in college sport gives them the ideal opportunity of gathering international experience and being able to further develop their character.
Timing
The best time to go to the USA on a sports scholarship is straight after you finish school. College coaches prefer to give scholarships to younger students, as it enables them to continually train and improve a player’s performance over a period of four years. It is also possible to go to the US for just one year. Due to the contact we have to a large number of college coaches we have been able to help athletes after they have completed their Bachelor to do their Master in the USA. The best timing is if you contact us about one year before you plan to start studying in the USA. Water polo players can start studying either at the Spring Semester (January) or the Fall Semester (August).
