Even if sport shooting isn’t as popular in the media as for example track and field or some ball sports, it is much wider spread than in Germany. The number of universities offering scholarships is limited to 30 in each division and both men and women have equal chances.
Requirements
You need to have taken part and achieved top placings in the National Championships. It is also a help if you have taken part in international competitions. However coaches often choose athletes where they can see potential, so you also have the chance of a scholarship if you are relatively new to the sport or are returning after injury.
Training
Each university has its own training program, however usually it will include 5 training units at the shooting range as well as fitness training, weight training and concentration training. Young athletes are often able to greatly improve their performance during their time at college and return home with a large amount of new live experience.
Competing
It is recommended to apply to start at the Fall Semester (August). The shooting season starts in the winter; however it is possible to receive a scholarship for the spring when members of teams drop out. Don’t forget to apply early, the supplication process takes around 9 months to complete. The National Championships, the highlight of the year take place for NCAA1 & NCAA2 in March.
